Abilify Depression Treatment Commercial

In this Abilify (AKA aripiprazole) commercial a mom is standing by the window looking forlorn as her teen daughter and husband converse in the background. A quick on screen title advises this is an "actor portrayal" and the woman says "I'm taking an anti-depressant but it feels like I need some more help." A male voice over advises that 2 out of 3 people need further help while being treated for depression so you should "talk to your doctor." The scenes continue with some maudlin piano music as the family takes to a wind swept coast line and line up for a movie at the Cineplex. Slowly the music brightens as the warnings mount. Abilify can do some harm to certain people including making depression worse and possibly causing physical damages. The spot ends with the woman saying "Adding Abilify has made a difference for me."

This Abilify commercial suffers from all that is wrong with prescription medication advertising. It's disguised as a testimonial, yet it's clear this woman is an actress. The music and imagery starts dark and goes light, despite the scary warning that include "thoughts of suicide" and "death." What an endorsement! Let's hope none of us are ever in a position when a Doctor on the Abilify payroll pushes this on a patient who truly needs help. Expect a news report someday advising that this product has done more harm than good. By that time though, the billions of dollars will already have been collected and a token payout can be made. I'll stick with aspirin.

  1. Who is the actress playing the mother? For that matter, who plays the daughter? They both look good to me.
